Candle Care
Master the Art of Candle Care:
The Science Behind the Initial Burn: When lighting a new candle for the first time, allow the candle to burn until the entire top surface of the candle becomes a melted pool of wax. This process is key and is known as the "memory burn". Burning as stated helps prevent tunneling and ensures an even burn in subsequent uses.
Trimming the Wick: Before each use, it is essential to trim the wick to approximately ¼ inch (0.6 cm) in length. Trimming the wick helps to maintain a controlled flame, minimizes soot and smoke (the nasty stuff we try to avoid), and prevents the wick from becoming too long, too short, or mushrooming.
Burn Time: All candles, believe it or not, have a recommended maximum burn time. Avoid burning a candle for more than 2-4 hours at a time to prevent overheating and excessive heat buildup. Allow the candle to cool completely and to re-solidify before relighting the candle.
Avoid Drafty Spaces: Place lit candles away from all drafts, such as open windows, fans, air conditioning vents, etc.. Drafts may cause an uneven burn in your candle, excessive flame flickering, and can even lead to the candle extinguishing itself.
(TOP) Safety Precautions: Never leave a burning candle unattended. Keep candles out of reach of children and pets. Ensure candles are placed on a level, stable and heat-resistant surface. Always use a candle holder or tray designed for candles to collect any wax from dripping.
Extinguishing the Candle: To extinguish a candle, use a candle snuffer or gently blow out the flame. This helps prevent hot wax from splattering and splashing on surrounding areas. Avoid using water or blowing with force, as it may cause wax to spill or the wick to dislodge while the candle is heated.
Candle Storage: Always store candles in a cool, dry place. Store away from direct sunlight. Any exposure to heat and sunlight can affect the color, fragrance, and consistency of the wax.
To Ensure Optimal Clean Burning: Always keep the candle's container clean and free from debris, such as trimmed wick fragments or matchstick remains. Materials such as these may ignite and pose a fire hazard.
Avoid Over Burning: Discontinue use of the candle when the base of the candle has about ½ inch (1.3 cm) of wax remaining. Burning a candle too close to the bottom of the container can cause the container of the candle to overheat and/or crack.
Testing Fragrances: If you have sensitivities or allergies, it's advisable to perform a fragrance test before burning a scented candle for an extended period of time. Light the candle briefly to ensure the scent and/or wax does not cause any adverse reactions.
By following proper precautions, you can maximize the enjoyment of your candles, all while maintaining a safe and pleasant burning experience.
